THE LEAD
A two-Michelin-starred name from London opens in the DIFC
Dubai's dining season restarts this weekend, and it does so with a name that does not need the hype. If you have been holding out for a reason to book somewhere worth dressing up for, this is it: Gymkhana, the London Indian that has held two Michelin stars since it opened in Mayfair in 2013, is now serving at Gate Village 7 in the DIFC. I would not file this under just another opening in a month full of them. A two-star kitchen landing in Gate Village is the kind of arrival that quietly resets where the DIFC crowd eats on a Friday night, and a debut like this books out fast.
The National's reviewer called the debut a dazzler. The Wagyu beef sukka with bone marrow (Dh195) is the show-stopper, with the Makhmali king crab (Dh295) and the Amritsari shrimp (Dh115) close behind. The kitchen runs daily from 6.30pm to 1am, so plan it as a dinner out.
Here is the practical part. A two-star London debut in the DIFC will be one of the harder reservations in town for the next few weeks, and the doors do not open until 6.30pm. If you want a table this weekend, book now and aim for the earlier end of the evening, before the after-work crowd fills Gate Village.

1 A Bavarian beer garden opens tonight on the Palm
The Bavarian Garden pop-up opens tonight, Friday 18 September, at Fairmont The Palm, and runs to 4 October from 6pm onwards. The classic hops package is Dhs200, the Bavarian hops package Dhs250, each covering unlimited German-beer pours over two hours, with food ordered a la carte on top. Three weeks, so no rush. Still, the opening weekend is usually the liveliest if you want the garden at its best.
 
2The Grand Mosque now charges for entry
A classic weekend outing just picked up a price tag. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi has introduced an entry fee: Dh5 for UAE residents with an Emirates ID, Dh10 for tourists, and Dh8 for visitors arriving through tour operators. Visitors aged 60 and older still enter free, and it remains free for worshippers. If the mosque is on your weekend plan, bring your Emirates ID for the resident rate and budget Dh5 per adult.
 
3The UAE base rate rises to 3.9%
The Central Bank of the UAE raised its Base Rate by 25 basis points, effective 17 September, from 3.65% to 3.9%, tracking the US Federal Reserve, which lifted its target range by the same margin to 3.75% to 4%. If your mortgage is fixed, nothing changes while the fixed term runs. If it is variable, your bank can nudge the repayment up at the next review, and if you hold cash, this is the moment to ask your bank about better deposit rates.
   
WHAT IT MEANS
What a higher base rate does to your Q4 money
A rate rise makes for a dull headline. What matters is the timing. The move to 3.9% is the direction of travel heading into the last quarter of the year, and it lands right when a lot of Dubai leases and loans come up for review. If you are on a variable-rate mortgage, this is not academic. It is a slightly higher monthly number the next time your rate resets, and it is worth knowing exactly when that reset date falls before it arrives.
The other side is real too. Savers have spent years watching deposit rates lag; a rising base rate is the first time in a while that shopping around for a fixed-term deposit actually pays back the effort. If you have cash sitting in a current account doing nothing, this is the nudge to move it.
