Central Dubai's Oud Metha corridor is now 75% faster
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) opened the upgraded Oud Metha Road and Al Asayel Street corridor on 20 September. The run through Oud Metha to Al Khail Road drops from about 20 minutes to five, a 75% cut, and it is already carrying traffic.
The build was substantial. Four upgraded junctions, four bridges and two tunnels, plus 14 km of new road knitting together Oud Metha Road, Al Asayel Street, Sheikh Rashid Road and Al Khail Road. Capacity on the corridor rises 50%, from 10,400 to 15,600 vehicles an hour in both directions, and access improves to Latifa Hospital and the Al Wasl Club. It sits inside the wider Sheikh Rashid Corridor project, aimed at the 420,000 people expected to live in Za'abeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha and Umm Hurair by 2030. RTA director general Mattar Al Tayer framed it as tying the big corridors together and easing the pressure on the chokepoints between them.
The 75% is measured on the corridor itself, at opening, before traffic finds it. The crawl from your building to the on-ramp, and Al Khail at 8am, are unchanged. What changes is the Za'abeel to Business Bay and Bur Dubai toward Garhoud crossings that bottlenecked here. If that's your route, drive it this week before everyone else does.
WHAT TO DO

If the Oud Metha to Al Asayel corridor is on your commute, drive it this week and judge for yourself. The RTA upgrade went live on 20 September, so the faster run is there for the taking today.

1 The outdoor season switches back on
Sharjah Safari reopens for its fifth season today, daily 8.30am to 6pm, with a new run of behind-the-scenes animal-care tours; the Al Dhaid park logged 186 animal births between April and June. Global Village's 31st season isn't far behind, with VIP advance packages on sale today through 25 September (general sale from the 26th) before the park reopens at 6pm on Wednesday 14 October. One catch worth heeding: Dubai Police have flagged cloned Global Village sites and fake VIP offers, so buy only through the official Coca-Cola Arena page and report anything dodgy via eCrime or 901. The outdoor months are the whole reason people put up with August here, and this is the week they come back.
 
2Free walk-in legal help at the Indian Consulate today
The Consulate General of India in Dubai is running a free legal counselling camp today, 2pm to 4.30pm at the Consulate Auditorium, walk-in with no appointment. Lawyers will give pro-bono advice to Indian nationals across Dubai and the Northern Emirates on cybercrime, banking and financial fraud, and misuse of Emirates ID, as part of the Seva Pakhwada programme. If you or someone you know is stuck mid-dispute over a fraudulent transaction or a hijacked Emirates ID and doesn't know the next legal step, this is a free, direct line to a professional for one afternoon only.
 
3Airports normal, some regional routes still cut
Airports first: on 20 September, DXB and Abu Dhabi were operating normally and flights to Riyadh were running, but flydubai and Air Arabia are still cancelling some Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait services, so check directly with the airline before you head out. On the diplomatic side, Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the Strait of Hormuz stays closed until Tehran's conditions are met, and Iran says it has passed seven conditions to Washington via Qatar; Saudi air defences intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh on Saturday, and the US Mission to the UAE issued a 20 September alert urging Americans to reconsider regional travel. Same loop we've watched for weeks, so give the airline's status page a quick look if you're flying regionally, and otherwise carry on with your week.
   
WHAT IT MEANS
Higher for longer: what the rate call means for your budget
The Fed lifted rates a quarter point last week to a 3.75% to 4.0% range, and because the dirham is pegged, the Central Bank of the UAE moved in step. The single hike isn't the story. The signal is that 16 of the Fed's 18 rate-setters expect at least one more increase this year, with US inflation still near 3.4% against a 2% target, and one honest read is that borrowing costs here stay high well into 2027.
So if you're on a variable mortgage or weighing a car loan before year-end, model the payment at the rate you'll likely face next year rather than today's, because that's the number that will actually land on your statement. The flip side is real, though: after years of earning nothing, cash finally pays. If you're sitting on a deposit, shop the rate. The gap between a lazy account and a good one is now worth the afternoon it takes to move the money.
