A Dubai Invite: bring family over, and Dubai hands you Dh3,000 back
Here's a rare one: a government scheme that actually pays you to do something you were probably going to do anyway. Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism has launched A Dubai Invite, and if you've got a cousin in Manila or a mate in Manchester who keeps saying they'll come see Dubai one day, this is the nudge that puts real money behind it. Nominate them, get them here on a tourist visa, and once the visit checks out you walk away with a rewards package worth more than Dh3,000 in hotel nights, restaurant deals and attraction passes. Not a discount code buried in an app, but a package in your name, for hosting the people you were already going to host.
The mechanics are where it gets interesting, because they tell you who this is really for. You nominate through a form on the Visit Dubai site, up to five visitors at a time, and each guest can be nominated once. The cap is three reward packages per resident, so it rewards the person with a genuine visiting network, not someone gaming a form. Your guests have to be non-residents arriving on a tourist visa or visa-on-arrival, landing in Dubai between 20 July and 31 October. Registration closes 30 September, packages go out in August, and you have until 31 December to redeem, though individual offers may run their own validity windows, so read the fine print before you book anything on the strength of it.
The timing tells its own story. DET is leaning into resident-driven tourism while the wider region stays choppy and visitor numbers need a floor under them. Dubai runs around 19.5 million visitors a year, and word-of-mouth from residents is the cheapest, stickiest channel there is. For you, the calculation is simpler: if someone in your family has been circling a trip, this is the first time the city is handing you something concrete to sweeten it. It is also, honestly, the kind of thing you forward to the family WhatsApp group before you have finished reading it.

1 UFC Fight Night lands on Yas Island on Saturday
UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi is at Etihad Arena on Yas Island on Saturday 25 July, doors from 6pm and the card running into the early hours of Sunday. 2Oil tops $100 and the UAE quietly routes trade around Hormuz
Brent crude hit $100 a barrel on Thursday, its first time since May, up more than 6% after fresh attacks on Red Sea shipping stoked fears over Gulf oil supply. The Trump-declared ceasefire from May has since collapsed, and Marco Rubio says Iran's leadership is 'not ready to make a deal.' The UAE's answer is concrete rather than rhetorical: DP World has signed a 50-year concession with the Fujairah Ports Authority to build two deepwater terminals on the east coast, a trade route that never touches the Strait of Hormuz. If you're flying out this summer, DXB is open and Emirates and flydubai are running broad schedules, but a string of foreign carriers stay suspended into the autumn, so check your specific flight before you bank on it.
 
3One week left on the India tax-return deadline
UAE-based Indians who owe an Indian income-tax return have until 31 July, one week out, to file for the 2025-26 financial year. A few things trip people up: being an NRI doesn't remove the obligation, your status is set by days physically present in India rather than your UAE visa, and most NRIs file ITR-2 or ITR-3, not the resident-only ITR-1. Miss it and a belated return costs up to Rs5,000 (Rs1,000 if your income is under Rs5 lakh), and filing isn't done until you e-verify within 30 days. India's tax helpline runs around the clock from Saturday, 25 July, through the 31st.

Oil at $100: the part a JLT resident hasn't priced in
A barrel price feels abstract until you trace where it actually lands. The first stop isn't your car. It's freight and insurance on everything that moves through the Gulf, which climb the moment tanker routes look riskier, and those costs sit inside the price of imported goods long before anyone connects the two.
That's the read I'd hold onto. Sustained $100 Brent is the kind of pressure that reaches a grocery receipt quietly, weeks after the headline, not something you'll notice at a till this week. The honest version: a one-day spike is noise, but a month of $100 becomes a cost-of-living story, so the thing I'm watching is whether it holds.

UAE CONTAINER CAPACITY (TEUs)

DP World's new Fujairah concession lifts the UAE's container-handling capacity from 19.4 million to almost 22 million twenty-foot units. The point isn't the tonnage, it's the geography: both new terminals sit on the Gulf of Oman side, so cargo can reach Jebel Ali without a single vessel entering the Strait of Hormuz. That's the UAE building its way around the chokepoint on a 30-month timeline, rather than waiting on a ceasefire.
