WEEKEND EDITION

THE LEAD
Dubai Opera turns 10 on Saturday, and the season finally starts this weekend
The first genuinely outdoor-friendly weekend in a while has landed, and the calendar rose to meet it. The big one is Dubai Opera's 10th-Anniversary Gala on Saturday, September 12: soprano Fatma Said with the UAE National Orchestra under Maestro Ahmed Farag, plus the world premiere of a new orchestral work by Mohamed Medhat, per Gulf News.
It's the kind of season-opener the cooler months are made for, and it lands on the first weekend that actually feels like it. Ten years of the venue is as good a reason as any to plan a proper night out.
The rest of the weekend doesn't need a ticket. There's more live music on the calendar again, and the weather finally allows a long breakfast somewhere with the doors open. Your Quick 3 has the practical bits, including an easy indoor option for Sunday night.
WHAT TO DO

The gala is Saturday, September 12, at Dubai Opera, so lock your plans today. And if you fly anywhere this weekend, check your exact flight on the airline's own site before you leave for the airport. More on that in What It Means below.

QUICK 3
1 JVC District 16 starts charging for street parking on Oct 15
Jumeirah Village Circle's District 16 (zone P117) begins paid on-street parking from October 15: Dh4 an hour from 8am to 5pm, Dh6 from 5pm to midnight, and free between midnight and 8am, per Gulf News. Residents can skip the hourly meter with a Parkonic membership, from Dh672 for a month up to Dh4,999 for the year, paid by SMS or auto-deducted from the car's Salik account. The bit that bites if you miss it: the resident registration deadline is October 13, and you'll need your title deed or Ejari and tenancy contract to lock the resident rate.

2iPhone 18 pre-orders open Saturday: UAE prices are out
Apple's new lineup lands with UAE prices confirmed: the iPhone 18 Pro starts at Dh5,099, and the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable, tops out at Dh13,559, per Khaleej Times. Pre-orders open on Saturday, September 12, so you can get in the first wave this weekend. Before you commit, Gulf News ran the numbers across the UAE, US, Saudi Arabia, the UK and India. The US is cheapest on list price, about Dh4,400 for the 18 Pro against Dh5,099 here, with the UAE second. That's sticker prices only, before taxes or warranty.

3Jasmine Sandlas plays Coca-Cola Arena on Sunday
If a gala isn't your speed, Jasmine Sandlas brings her tour to Coca-Cola Arena on Sunday, September 13, per Platinumlist. It's an easy indoor Sunday-night option before the working week starts, and the arena is the usual reliable room for a big-name show without a long drive. A sign, too, that the live-music calendar is filling back up as the season turns.

WHAT IT MEANS
The Red Sea, your flight, and the pump
The war reached the Red Sea this week. Houthi forces seized the port of Mokha on Thursday, tightening their grip near Bab Al Mandeb, one of the busiest shipping lanes anywhere. Two knock-ons for Dubai. Flights: Khaleej Times and Gulf News reported delays and selective cancellations on Thursday on routes to Pakistan, Kuwait and India. If you're flying this weekend, look up your specific flight on the airline's site before you head out.
Fuel: oil jumped about 5% on Thursday, with Brent around $106.60 and US crude at $101.21, back over $100 for the first time since May. UAE pump prices are set once a month, so nothing changes at the pump now. That number sits behind the end-of-month fuel decision.
12
VESSELS THROUGH BAB AL MANDEB

Ships crossing the Bab Al Mandeb strait by 6pm Thursday, down from 30 the day before, after Houthi forces seized the port of Mokha (The National, Sep 10). That figure counts how many ships crossed, and says nothing about how much cargo they carried.

WEEKEND PICK
Trevor Noah tickets are on sale now
Saturday's gala at Dubai Opera is your lead story. If you're planning further ahead, tickets for Trevor Noah's two November dates at the same venue are on sale now. The good seats go first, so book early if you care where you sit.

Your landlord wants more rent. Dubai's RERA law sets the legal ceiling. Enter your building, get the number, see where you stand, and know exactly whether they can.

Enjoy the weekend, whether that's the gala, a Sunday show, or just eating outside for the first time in months. Monday I'll pick up the Red Sea story and the flight situation, plus the JVC parking registration deadline on October 13 for anyone in District 16. Stephan
