DAILY CRISIS BRIEF
STATUS — DAY 19

Eid Al Fitr moon-sighting takes place tonight — if confirmed, Thursday March 20 is Day 1, federal holiday runs March 19–22, back to work March 23. Iran's National Security Council chief was killed in strikes, introducing new uncertainty about next steps. A drone struck a UAE oil facility on March 17; no confirmed casualties at the site. DP World's Jebel Ali port suspended operations after debris from an intercepted missile caused a berth fire. UAE defences have now intercepted a cumulative 314 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,672 drones since strikes began. Total casualties in UAE: 7 killed, 145 injured.

Eid Al Fitr this week — federal holiday March 19–22, back to work March 23

The UAE moon-sighting committee meets tonight after Maghrib prayers. The UAE Astronomy Centre predicts Eid Al Fitr will begin Thursday March 20, making the official federal public holiday run from Wednesday March 19 through Saturday March 22. Back to work Sunday March 23 — the same day KHDA has confirmed Dubai schools resume after the extended spring break. Banks and government offices close for the full holiday period. Private sector employees receive the same federal holiday entitlement.

Eid announcements are typically confirmed by 8–9 PM on the night of the sighting. The Hijri calendar makes precise advance dating impossible — tonight's confirmation determines whether Thursday or Friday becomes Day 1 of the holiday. UAE authorities have not indicated any disruption to the standard Eid announcement and holiday procedures.

For families with children, March 23 school resumption is confirmed by KHDA regardless of Eid timing. Dubai private schools have been closed since February 28. The holiday period aligns the extended spring break with Eid — March 23 marks a return to normal for both employment and education, barring further security developments. WHAT TO DO

Eid is confirmed after tonight's sighting — don't plan around it until the official announcement. For school parents, March 23 resumption is confirmed regardless of Eid timing. If you have travel during the break, verify your airline's current operational status before heading to the airport.

1  Senior Iranian official killed — escalation or negotiation next

Iran's National Security Council chief was confirmed killed in strikes. He was among Iran's most senior security officials and a central figure in its military response coordination. The development introduces genuine uncertainty — Gulf analysts say it could accelerate Iranian decision-making in either direction: further escalation to demonstrate resolve, or an opening for ceasefire talks given the losses Iran has absorbed. UAE officials have not commented. Qatar's foreign ministry restated on Monday: "If they stop the attacks, we can find a way out with diplomacy." The diplomatic window that opened last week remains technically open. (Sources: Gulf News, Al Jazeera, Reuters)

WHAT TO DO

Keep phone alerts on. The next 48–72 hours may bring changes in the pace of activity. Follow NCEMA on the UAE Alert app for real-time official guidance. Do not share or amplify unverified information about military developments.

2  Jebel Ali port suspended — Dubai's supply chain under new pressure

DP World suspended operations at Jebel Ali after debris from an intercepted missile caused a fire at one of the port's berths. Jebel Ali is the Middle East's largest container port and handles approximately 36% of Dubai's trade activity. DP World has not confirmed a reopening timeline. This compounds existing pressure from the Strait of Hormuz situation, where Maersk, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd have all suspended transits. Consumer goods, construction materials, and fresh produce imports are the most exposed to any extended closure. (Sources: Al Jazeera, CNBC, Windward Maritime Intelligence)

WHAT TO DO

Stocking practical household staples is a sensible step given confirmed disruptions — not a panic measure. UAE April fuel prices are set March 31 and will reflect both Hormuz rerouting costs and any Jebel Ali delay. Super 98 was AED 2.59/L in March.

3  Lufthansa group and Qatar Airways extended through March 28 — Emirates operating

Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, ITA, and Eurowings have extended their UAE suspension through at least March 28. Qatar Airways is running limited services only through March 28. Emirates is operating 110+ destinations from DXB; some regional routes remain suspended through March 31 (Amman, Bahrain, Doha, Dammam, Kuwait, Baghdad, Khasab). Etihad is operating with similar regional restrictions. Dubai Airport city check-in locations remain temporarily closed — airport check-in only. UAE airspace briefly closed March 17 during a new attack wave, then reopened. (Sources: Gulf News, Time Out Dubai, UAE GCAA)

WHAT TO DO

If you hold a Lufthansa group or Qatar Airways ticket through March 28, contact your carrier directly for rebooking. Emirates: free rebooking through April 30 for tickets issued before Feb 28. Etihad: free rebooking through May 15. Always check the airline app — not social media — before going to DXB.

4  Day 19 interception count — 314 ballistic missiles, 1,672 drones, rate above 95%

UAE Ministry of Defence cumulative figures as of March 18: 314 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,672 drones intercepted since February 28. Total casualties in UAE: 7 killed, 145 injured. Interception rate remains above 95%. A drone struck a UAE oil facility on March 17; no confirmed casualties at the site. State of defence remains in effect. All figures are from official UAE Ministry of Defence statements via WAM. (Sources: UAE Ministry of Defence via WAM, NCEMA)

WHAT TO DO

Keep phone alerts on at all times. Follow shelter-in-place guidance during every alert — interior room, away from windows. Do not film or photograph interception sites or military infrastructure.

36%
of Dubai's trade through Jebel Ali

Jebel Ali handles approximately 36% of Dubai's total trade activity. DP World suspended operations on March 17 after debris from an intercepted missile caused a berth fire. Combined with the Strait of Hormuz situation — where Maersk, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd have all suspended transits — Dubai is now facing simultaneous confirmed disruption to both its primary port and its primary shipping corridor. April consumer prices will reflect both.

Tonight's Eid moon-sighting — what to watch and when

The UAE moon-sighting committee announces Eid confirmation after Maghrib prayers tonight. Here's what to track:

When: After Maghrib prayers — approximately 6:30–7:30 PM UAE time
Where to confirm: WAM (UAE state news agency) and UAE Ministry of Justice official channels
If confirmed tonight: Federal holiday runs March 19 (Wed) through March 22 (Sat). Back to work March 23 (Sun).
Schools: March 23 resumption confirmed by KHDA — does not change regardless of Eid announcement timing.

Day 19. Eid arrives in a conflict zone — the port is down, some flights aren't running, and everyone's watching tonight's sky for the moon. If this brief made your morning clearer, pass it on to someone who needs it.

Tomorrow: April insurance renewals — what the war exclusion clause means for your home, motor, and travel policies, and which coverage gaps to close before your renewal arrives.
